Help Find a Cure for Breast Cancer

Thank you for taking an interest in the prevention and awareness of breast cancer. Breast cancer is truly an epidemic among women and we don't know why.

All of us need to help others as well as ourselves learn about this devastating disease because all women are at risk for breast cancer. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It is estimated that there will be 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women in the United States in 2006. An estimated 40,970 women will die from breast cancer. It is also estimated that 1,720 men will be diagnosed and 460 men will die of breast cancer during 2006.

In my family this year alone two of my dear and wonderful aunts have been diagnosed with breast cancer. One is in stage 2 and the other in stage 3. Both women have yearly mammograms and do monthly self exams, so don’t think for a minute you are safe just by doing these two exams. These exams help and shouldn’t be overlooked but they don’t keep us 100% safe. About 15 to 20 percent of cancers may be missed with mammography alone, but with both mammography and a breast exam done by a trained medical professional, the chances of a cancer going undetected are less than 5 percent! The Breast Cancer Site states; if detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram! Ladies, make an appointment today, please. Tell A Friend is a program designed to help increase breast cancer screening and early detection through regular mammograms.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation recommends a 3-step approach to breast cancer screening that includes, depending on a woman’s age, a combination of mammography, clinical breast exams and breast self-exams.

• Annual mammograms beginning at age 40.

• Clinical breast exam at least every 3 years beginning at age 20, and annually from age 40 on.

• Monthly breast self-exam beginning by age 20.
